Hello from Suttons Farm,

It’s been a busy start to 2012 and we are well and truly in full swing! The biennial Apple & Grape Festival was a great success for the district and now we’re gearing up for the Easter break.

Easter is a great time to visit Stanthorpe as the temperatures start to drop and the wood fires start burning. It’s also one of the best times to visit the farm to Pick Your Own apples as we will have multiple varieties including the all time favourites, Pink Lady, ready to pick straight from the trees. We are open every day through the Easter period from 9.30am to 4.30pm.

Dad has enjoyed visits from the media recently. In February, Sophie Formica and the Channel 7 The Great South East Team were in town to profile the region’s Apple & Grape Festival. Check out some of the still shorts of Dad picking apples with the Team in the Orchard here.

We also enjoyed a visit from Alison Walsh from the Courier Mail in February. Alison reviewed our Shed Cafe for the Courier Mail’s Queensland Life Section. You can read the review here.

I hope you are enjoying a great start to 2012 too. If you are heading to the Granite Belt,  please pop in and say hello. Our Cafe’s signature Apple Pie is the perfect treat and the Merlo Coffee hits the spot for those taking a driving break.

Cheers,

Claire Sutton and the Suttons Farm Team

Hello from Suttons Farm,

We’ve had a busy start to 2012 on the farm with the first apples ripening for the season and a growing range of goodies in the Shed Café. Current and upcoming highlights include:

2012 Pick Your Own Apple Season

The 2012 Apple season has begun! Currently the Royal Galas are ready for picking with favourites including Pink Lady and Granny Smiths expected to ripen around Easter (depending on weather). There is nothing better than tree ripened apples fresh from the tree. The 2012 season runs from now until early June. Apple picking is a great experience for children and adults alike.

Homemade Goodies

All our products are handmade by Dad on the farm. Recently, he’s been focused on growing our delicious conserves range. Current favourites available include Plum, Pluot and Apricot jams and Apple butter, chutney and jelly. My favourite is the Apple Chutney with Mum’s fresh baked sour dough, ham and cheese – Yum!

Our Suttons Farm favourites are also in stock including our Apple Juices, Ciders and Vinegars.

Apple & Grape Harvest Festival: March 2 – 4

The Granite Belt region will be host to the biennial Apple & Grape Harvest Festival on March 2 – 4. The event includes a country style grand parade, food and wine fiesta, live entertainment, street stalls and rides.

The farm will be open from 9.30am to 4.30pm daily during the festival period and we will also have a stand at the Food & Wine Fiesta where you can purchase Cider and Juice to enjoy in the Park.

Mum’s Apple Muffin Recipe (As featured in ‘The Road Ahead’ Magazine)

We’ve had a lot of great feedback from readers of the RACQ magazine who have enjoyed Mum’s apple muffin recipe (we’d expect nothing less from a former CWA Cooking Champion!) so I thought I’d share it here for you to enjoy.

SUTTON’S APPLE MUFFINS (makes 12)

INGREDIENTS: 125g melted butter, ½ cup sugar, 1 egg, ¾ cup milk, 1 ½ cups plain flour, 1 tblsp baking powder, ½ tsp cinnamon, 2 cups peeled and diced granny smith apples (equivalent of 2 apples), Topping: ¼ cup finely chopped pecan nuts, ¼ cup brown sugar, ½ tsp cinnamon.

METHOD: Preheat oven to 200 Degrees Celsius. In a large bowl, combine melted butter, sugar, beaten egg and milk. Sift in flour, baking powder, apple and cinnamon. Stir gently until just combined. The mixture should be lumpy, not smooth. Spoon mixture into muffin tins until 2/3 full. Combine topping ingredients and sprinkle over muffins. Bake 15-20 minutes until lightly browned.

Well that sums up the current farm highlights. We’d love to see you if you venture to the Granite Belt. Whether you’re keen to pick your own apples or stay indoors and enjoy a homemade lunch or sweet something at The Shed Cafe, please come and say hello.

Cheers,

Claire Sutton

At these lunches Queensland fine foods are the focus on the menu.  The most recent Round Table was held at Bretts Wharf where Executive Chef Alastair McLeod profiled produce from various regions including the Granite Belt.  Apples, cider and apple juice from David & Ros Sutton were part of the menu which was complemented by wine from Ballandean Estate.  Later in the afternoon a Producer Showcase further profiled premium products to the food service sector.  Suttons, Lyra H, Ballandean Estate and Strange Bird Wines, from the Granite Belt were among the six producers profiled.
